Bernice was born on May 10, 1940 in Jefferson City, MO the daughter of the late Herb and Myrtle (Filter) Nuelk and passed away suddenly at her home on Thursday, October 20th.

Bernice was loved by so many, a former 1st grade teacher at Immanuel Lutheran School in Palatine for ten years where she left a mark on all her students for her deep love and compassion she shared with them.  She was also an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she had served on the school board, was a member of the Altar Guild and the bell choir. Bernice loved people and wanted to be involved in their lives to help them in whatever way she could.  Most important in her life was the love she shared with her family and especially her grandchildren, whom affectionately knew her as Mimi.

Mimi had a unique ability to inspire her grandchildren to have an appreciation of reading and learning.  She had a natural way of teaching through life experiences including doing crafts, cooking, baking, exploring the outdoors, traveling and appreciating her gardens that she so enjoyed working in.  She will be deeply missed by her beloved family and all who knew her.

Beloved wife of  48 years of  Howard W. Westphal; loving mother of Steven (Jodi) and David (Amy) Westphal; most cherished grandmother of Jessica, Megan, Payton and Tyler Westphal.

In lieu of flowers, memorials, in memory of Bernice, would be appreciated for the Pipe Organ Fund of Immanuel Lutheran Church.
