Kathleen, affectionately known as Kay, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, enveloped in the love and presence of her family. Born on December 22, 1941, in Oak Park, IL, she was the cherished daughter of Harlan and Genevieve Richards.
Kay's life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and warmth. She was a beacon of light, known for her quick wit and warm smile, traits that endeared her to everyone she met. Her ability to make others feel welcome and valued was a hallmark of her generous spirit.
Kay's academic journey took her from Loyola University in Chicago to the historic halls of Oxford University in England. Her inquisitive mind and passion for learning were evident throughout her life. Professionally, Kay dedicated 38 years as the Traffic Manager at WFMT 98.7 Classical radio, where her meticulous nature and love for music harmonized beautifully.
Kay's personal life was filled with deep enduring connections. She was married to Robert Quarles for a decade, during which they welcomed their three beloved children, Ray, Steve, and Rachel. However, it was Tim Hooker, her life partner of over 40 years, who was the true love of her life. Their partnership was a testament to enduring love and companionship.
A member of Saint Michael's Episcopal Church in Barrington, IL, for over four decades, Kay found great joy and solace in her faith. Her involvement with the church choir and attendance at Sunday Mass were among her most cherished activities, and she considered the congregation her second family.
Kay's love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. She relished the time spent as casual gatherings, holidays, birthdays, weddings, and special events. Her legacy is carried on by her children - Ray Quarles, Steve Quarles (Arlene), and Rachel Soos (Victor) - her cherished sister Edith Clark, her loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Though predeceased by her partner Tim Hooker and her beloved brother James Richards, Kay's spirit lives on through her family and all who were touched by her kindness and generosity.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff at Good Shepherd Hospital for their tender loving care during Kay's final days.
