William 'Bill' Hessel, age 85, of Lake Zurich, Illinois, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 6, 1941, in Greene, Iowa, he was the son of the late Robert and Caroline Hessel. Bill grew up throughout Iowa and later settled in Lake Zurich, Illinois.
William earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Loyola University and a Master’s degree in chemistry from Roosevelt University in Chicago. He spent his career making significant contributions to the can industry, working as a chemist for American National Can in Barrington, Illinois, until his retirement.
A dedicated horticulturist, Bill belonged to numerous garden clubs and plant societies, ultimately serving as a Master Judge for the National Garden Clubs of America. Beyond his love of gardening, he was passionate about theater and film, reading, engaging in book discussions, singing in the church choir, cooking and baking, and in recent years, playing trivia and Mahjong with his cherished friends and family. Possessing a sharp intellect and a lifelong hunger for learning, he had a rare gift for enriching every conversation with his profound knowledge and a remarkably sharp, engaging mind.
William’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was preceded in death by Patricia Hessel, his beloved wife of 55 years. He is survived by his three devoted children, Eve (Scott) Southwood, Adrian (Bob) Johnson, and Brian (Joanne) Hessel; and his five cherished grandchildren, Kyle, Georgia, Paige, Bradley, and Joseph.
His presence will be deeply missed, but his brilliant mind, the bright gardens he brought to life, and the vast knowledge he shared will never be forgotten. He leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory and the deep love he gave them.
