Walter passed away on July 19, 2025, he was born on April 21, 1957. Walter was deeply loved and will be remembered fondly for his dedication to family, his sharp wit, and his generous spirit.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Caryn B. Simons; daughters, Kelsee Courtney Simons (Chris Travers) and Britnee Joy Luburich (Nick); cherished grandchildren, Juliana Rose, Michael Jay, and Joseph Lee; brothers, Courtney Simons and James Simons (Stephanie Kurth); sister, Virginia Simons Harpold; niece, Heather Beattie; and nephews, Zachary Harpold (Kim Lisak), Adam Harpold, and Jonathan Beattie (Katherine). He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Suzan Vigilante (John); nieces, Marisa Vigilante (Jordan) and Maren Campbell (Rich); and nephew, John Vigilante (Kayla). Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Elinor and C.S. Simons, and his sister Claudia Beattie.

Walter proudly served his country as a submariner in the U.S. Navy, demonstrating remarkable technical expertise. After his military service, he had a successful career with Konica Business Technologies. However, Walter often shared that his greatest achievement was becoming a devoted stay-at-home dad, nurturing his children and developing exceptional culinary skills that delighted family and friends.

A man of diverse talents, Walter was trained as a classical pianist and shared his love for music through teaching. He was also a skilled butcher, known locally for his exceptional knife skills and warmth. Walter and Caryn met through their shared passion for community theater, which brought them together and remained an important part of their lives.

Walter was a voracious reader, known affectionately as a “walking encyclopedia,” always ready with an insightful story or valuable knowledge. He found great joy tending to his vegetable garden and ensuring his family had access to fresh, wholesome food.

In his later years, Walter returned passionately to his Catholic faith, attending mass several times each week. He was a devoted leader in his faith community, actively participating in the Exodus 90 program and the men’s Schola group, which was an integral part of his life. Walter loved the Latin liturgy and frequently referenced Latin church phrases, with “Carpe Diem” being among his favorites. Walter’s caring nature made him the keeper and protector of all he loved.

Above all, Walter treasured his role as “Gramps,” taking immense pride and joy in caring for his grandchildren from birth.

Walter was also a passionate supporter of Chesterton Academy in Volo and his beloved church community, especially the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius at St. Peter’s Church. Walter was a member of the Libertarian Party, reflecting his deeply-held beliefs in personal liberty and freedom. His legacy of generosity and devotion will continue to inspire those who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter’s memory may be made to Chesterton Academy of the Immaculate Heart in Volo or St. Peter’s Church in Volo (funds to be applied toward the new organ).
