A Memorial Visitation for Steven C. Elrod will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 415 S. Buesching Rd., Lake Zurich, IL from 11:00 AM until the time of the Memorial Service at 2:00 PM. The Interment will be private.
Steven Carl Elrod of Grayslake, IL (formerly of Lake Zurich, IL) passed away peacefully on Saturday June 21. He was 76 years old.
Steve was a hardworking, devoted, and humble man. He spent much of his career as a respected HVAC tradesman and businessman, following in the footsteps of his father.
Steve was also a passionate drag racer (dragsters and funny cars) at Great Lakes Dragaway in Union Grove, WI from the 1960s through the early 1990s. Though he retired from racing when he learned he would become a grandfather, he continued to volunteer his time and knowledge to help others build and race their own cars. A perfectionist when it came to engines, Steve was happiest when helping others succeed.
Steve loved his family and found his greatest joy in being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved spending time at home, especially during the holidays with everyone gathered around the table. He was known for his love of Diet Coke, a good fish fry, the Northwoods of Wisconsin, anything Chevrolet (especially old Novas), practical jokes, and all his beloved rescue dogs over the years: Joseph, Maggie, Hunter, Wrigley, and Mac.
He was also a proud Air Force Veteran.
He is survived by Sheila, his loving wife of nearly 56 years of marriage; his children, Lori and Robert; grandchildren, Emma (Dillon), Austin, Steven and Grayson; great-grandchildren, Amaya and Wyatt John. Many extended family members and friends who loved him including Katy Ramsey and Don Zucco. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest Elrod and Rosemary Tampa.
Steve lived his life with generosity, integrity, and heart. He was a man who noticed the little things, rooted for the underdog, and never stopped lending a hand. His presence, his humor, and his kindness will be missed beyond measure.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Steve’s memory to Gary Sinise Foundation, http://bit.ly/4ngRnjs or Young at Heart Senior Pet Adoptions, 4301 S. IL Route 47, Woodstock, IL 60098 or to donate online, click here: http://bit.ly/44cD8nc
