Nicholas was born February 2, 1932 in Chicago, and passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021 in Lake Barrington.

Nicholas was the beloved husband of Joan M. Veternik (nee Antosz); loving father of Laurie Salvano, Vicki (Tom) Allen, Jane (Earl) Blankenship and Nicholas Veternik Jr.; loving grandfather of Melissa (Zach), Andrea (Rich), James, Anna, Brent, Steven, Kevin, Jay and Earl Thomas; great-grandfather to Brooklyn and Scarlett; dear son of the late John and Anna (nee Misik) Veternik; fond brother of John Veternik Jr.

Nick grew up on Karlov Ave. in Chicago and attended St. Phillips high school. He graduated from Northern Illinois University and worked in banking throughout his career, as a financial officer and controller. He enjoyed gathering with friends and family at Harmony Hall and attending Cubs games. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served during the Korean War. Nick and Joan married in Chicago in 1958 and later moved to Mt. Prospect. Family was central to Nick’s life and he planned vacations and road trips to create lifetime memories. Nick and Joan enjoyed 23 years as snowbirds in Florida, they traveled to Hawaii and Europe, and they organized a 50th wedding anniversary family cruise. Nick loved to read, listen to jazz music, watch PBS television, play golf, fish, play Mariash (cards) and take walks. He will forever be remembered for putting his family first, for his wisdom, his many stories and his sense of humor.
