Visitation for Marvin L. Selock, 82, of Palatine, will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 12 Noon on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy., Palatine. The Interment, with military honors, will be held on Monday, May 5, 2025, at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
Marvin Leon Selock was born on August 15, 1942, in Sullivan, Illinois, the son of June and William C. ‘‘Johnnie” Selock. After graduating from Sullivan High School in 1960, he entered the U.S. Air Force where he was stationed 3 years at a SAC Air Force Base near Madrid, Spain. After completing his enlistment, he enrolled in Western Illinois University where he graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Business. It was there he met his wife Jule Hornecker of Geneseo, Illinois, and they were married on September 2, 1964. Marvin and Jule have two sons, Daryl and Darren. They are also proud grandparents of Owen, Nolan, and Amber.
Marvin received his MBA in Finance from DePaul University in 1975. His career included positions with Continental Illinois National Bank of Chicago, Homewood Federal Savings and Loan Association, South Chicago Bank, and Office Administrator of the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. Marvin retired as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1998; later volunteering with the Satellite Retires Activities Office (SPAO) in Arlington Heights. He holds memberships in Matteson American Legion Post No. 474, Chicago Heights Moose Lodge No. 828, and Decatur Elks Lodge No. 411.
Marvin loved fishing for that bass or walleye that would give him a good fight. During his lifetime he had a variety of fishing/ski boats for the enjoyment of family and friends. He also enjoyed yard work. He spent countless time pruning the rose bushes and walking the yard squirting dandelions with his bottle of weed killer. Besides his Masonic activities and participating in Masonic ritual work, he proudly participated in many activities in the active and retired Army Reserve. Jule and Marv enjoyed traveling and visited Hawaii particularly Oahu many times. The Arizona Memorial was a frequent tour on these visits.
Marvin’s Masonic career began in Chicago Heights Lodge No. 851, A.F.& A.M. He was raised as a Master Mason on August 28, 1973, and would serve as Worshipful Master in 1979, 1990, 1997, 1998, and 1999. He is currently a member of Neighbor Lodge No. 1169 A.F.&A.M. by merger.
Brother Selock received the degrees of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Chicago’s Fall Reunion of 1985, subsequently serving as Sovereign Prince of Chicago Council, Princes of Jerusalem in 2007-2008. He was coroneted Sovereign Grand Inspector General of the 33rd Degree of the Scottish Rite of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in Washington, D.C. on August 22, 2007. He was elected Fraternal Treasurer for the Valley of Chicago in 2009 and served until 2024.
Marvin was exalted in Chicago Heights Chapter No. 218, RAM on October 25, 1973, and elected as Most Excellent Grand High Priest of Illinois on July 22, 1994. He was initiated into Harvey Council, No. 106, CM on November 3, 1973, and installed as Thrice Illustrious Master on June 20, 1985. On November 20, 1973, Marvin was knighted in Chicago Heights Commandery No. 78, KT and elected Right Eminent Grand Commander of Illinois on July 20, 2002.
His Masonic memberships and honors include: Order of the Purple Cross and Past Governor of Illinois York Rite College No. 15, Knight Commander of the Temple Grand Encampment of Knights Templar, DeMolay Cross of Honor and Honorary Legion of Honor, Frank S. Land Preceptory, Medinah Shriners of Chicago AAOMAS, Amateur Radio Unit, Past Eminent Prior of Illinois Priory No. 11 KYCH, Past Preceptor of St. Peter Tabernacle XXII HRAKTP, G. Wilbur Bell Council No. 72 AMD, General Joseph Warren Order No. 119 Sword of Bunker Hill, Masonic Veterans Association and Starlite Chapter No. 1 OES.
Marvin was the beloved husband of Jule Selock for 60 years; loving father of Daryl (Jennifer) Selock, Darren (Nichole) Selock; cherished grandfather of Owen, Nolan, and Amber; and fond brother of Debbie (Allan) Eaton. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley (the late Robert) Thilmony.
