Margaret Schermer

Visitation for Margaret Schermer, 93, of Palatine, will be on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy, Palatine. The Burial will be private.

Margaret was born in Yugoslavia on September 14, 1932, to Josef and Elisabeth Dechert. During the war, her parents moved the family to Germany. She was one of eight children and had four brothers and three sisters, all of whom died before her. She later came to Chicago, Illinois, where she made her home, married, and had three children.

Margaret worked for more than 20 years in the Food Service Department at Ravenswood Hospital. Her long service reflected an important part of her life in Chicago and her years of steady work there.

Outside of work, Margaret enjoyed gardening and attending church. She was also known for riding her bicycle wherever she needed to go, as she never drove. She loved to cook German food and hosted many family dinners.

She will be remembered with respect by those who knew her.

Margaret was the beloved mother of the late Frank (Irene) Schermer, Doris (Tommy) Grgin, and Carl (Joy) Schermer; cherished grandmother of Frank Jr (Maribeth), Kevin (Rachel), Erika (Zachary), Rachel (Michael), and Veronica (Andrew); and fond great-grandmother of Ethan, Otto, Sadie, Leo, Evelyn, Lincoln, the late Andrew, and the late Nicholas .
