Palatine

A Celebration of Life for June S. Nickel, 92, formerly of Palatine, will be held from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy, Palatine.  The Interment will be private at Acacia Park Cemetery, Chicago.

June was born in Chicago, IL on June 18, 1931, to Harvey and Adeline Sprungman. She passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024.

June and her husband, Bill met in High School and began dating seriously during their senior year. They married in 1953 and were together for 58 ½ years when Bill passed away. June graduated with a teaching degree from Lewis University, starting a family and becoming a stay-at-home mom sidelined her career. June and Bill planned a family vacation each year that involved jumping in the car and traveling the country. They moved to Palatine in the mid-sixties, where they lived for 47 years. They became very active at Christ Lutheran Church, where they developed a deep friendship with a number of people, which became known as the "church group". It started from a spiritual aspect but grew to a social friendship that lasted over 40 years. Bill made a number of business-related trips to Germany and June was jealous. In 1984, they finally made their first two-week overseas trip to Germany. It became the first of many such trips that consisted of European river cruises and self-planned trips renting a car, being their own tour guide & stopping at B&B’s. June being the organizer did most of the planning, and this was before the internet!

Like many parents, they also made great grandparents. It seemed like there was always at least one grandchild there during the summer and holidays.  The grandkids were included in their love of travel. This meant 1–3 day adventures, Disney trips and even some oversea excursions.

After their kids became adults, June combined her love of teaching & children, and became a pre-school teacher, finally using that degree! She did this for a number of years, making lifelong friendships. It was during this time that they reconnected with their High School friends. This included lunch or dinners with locals, annual weekend trips and reunions including their 50th High School reunion.

After Bill passed, June settled into a quiet life, her children by her side. As her dementia worsened, she was moved to Waverly Inn, a memory care facility, in late January where with Vitas Hospice, she received excellent care from individuals who are truly angels.

June was the beloved wife of the late William Edward Nickel of 58 ½ years.  She is survived by her children, Robert Nickel, Bonnie Motley, Barbara Godsey (Bob Goldberg) and William A. Nickel; grandchildren, Rebecca-Joy (Adam) Rentchler, William (Lauren) Lindberg, Dustin (Thea) Motley and Zachary Nickel; and great-grandchildren, Dylan Lindberg; Michael and Colleen Rentchler, Mason Lindberg, Cheyann Motley, Liam Lindberg, and Declan Lindberg;

She was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Caleb Daniel Lindberg; and her brother, Harvey Robert (the late Marianne) Sprungman, Jr.
