Jon Ronald Freier, born on March 9, 1949, passed away peacefully at his home in Arlington Heights, Illinois, on June 19, 2025, after living with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was 76 years old.
A celebration of his life will be held sometime in August.
Jon was the beloved son of Arthur E. and Alice T. Freier (née Christensen). He grew up in Chicago and Arlington Heights, where he began a life marked by deep connections and enduring friendships. Jon’s warmth and ability to form lasting bonds were among his most cherished qualities—his gift for friendship touched many lives across the country.
He is lovingly remembered by his brother Jeff A. Freier (Penny), and his sister Alice M. Woertendyke (Bob, deceased). Jon was a devoted uncle to Jason Woertendyke and the late Rob Woertendyke, and a proud great-uncle to Robert, Benjamin, and Molly Woertendyke. His extended family of cousins also held a special place in his heart.
For the past two decades, Jon found both purpose and companionship through his work at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library. Surrounded by books and close friends, he thrived in an environment that reflected his love of learning and community. He led the Non-Fiction book discussion group “Books and Brew” at a local restaurant—a gathering that became more than just literary conversation; it became a circle of chosen family. Jon often said that the friends he made through the library were like family to him.
Beyond his professional life, Jon held a deep affection for Santa Fe, New Mexico—a place that brought him joy and inspiration. His love for his family, friends, and favorite places was unwavering. Jon will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jon’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or The Salvation Army.
