A Celebration of Life for James P. Koukal, known to many as Jim, 75, of Lake Zurich, will be held on May 23, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at American Legion Post #964, 51 Lions Drive, Lake Zurich, IL 60047. Interment will be private.

Jim was born on April 19, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. He passed away at his home in Lake Zurich, Illinois, on April 22, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Jim cared deeply about his family, friends, and co-workers. He will be remembered for his selfless nature, warm spirit, and easygoing personality. Whether spending time with family, singing along to music by John Prine, or watching the Chicago Bears on a Sunday afternoon, he found joy in life’s simple moments. His hugs were big, his smiles were sweet, and his love for others was abundant.

At 18 years old, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was deployed to Korea during the Vietnam War. He often shared stories of his time in service, with themes of friendship, sacrifice, and adventure. Even in his final days, Jim could open a photo album and recall vivid memories of the friends, places, and history from his time overseas.

In his professional life, he was an employee of All American Exterior Solutions for 37 years, where he built lifelong relationships. His time at All American reflected who he was as a person: consistent, dedicated, and trusted. As co-workers visited Jim in his final days, the immense impact he had on others became increasingly clear; it felt more like a family gathering to reminisce about the many years they shared together. He leaves behind a difficult void to fill and will be sorely missed.

As his children grew older, families expanded, and grandchildren arrived, Jim found his happy place as the role of “Grandpa.” The joy he got from his grandkids was evident; singing, playing, and making lunch with his grandkids brought him immeasurable happiness. His excitement when his grandkids walked in the door was genuine; he loved nothing more than a packed house with his family on a weekend afternoon, fully aware of the chaos and mess that would ensue. He will always be remembered for being a loving and present grandfather.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, William Dale and Norma (McKinnis) Koukal; his brother, John Koukal; and his sister, Mary (Dan) Hollings. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Karen (England) Koukal; his brother, William (Lynn) Koukal, and sister, Jane (Mike) Cassaro; his children, James (Sarah) Koukal, Susan (Chip) Brewster, and William (Kelly) Koukal; and his grandchildren, Henry and George Koukal, Lilah and Tristan Brewster, and Lane and Jade Koukal.
