Visitation for Herbert F. Hetzel, 94, of Palatine, will be from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy, Palatine. Family and friends will meet directly at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 200 N. Plum Grove Road, Palatine, on Thursday, February 26, 2026, where Visitation will continue from 10:00 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. The Interment will follow at Union Cemetery, Palatine.
Herb was born on February 21, 1931, in Chicago, to Johann and Freida (nee Eskafier) Hetzel. After graduating from Taft High School in 1949 (Chicago), he enlisted in the United States Airforce Reserve where he served from 1949-1951 during the Korean War. Herb was stationed in Marietta, Ga. After serving his country, he became a certified tool and die mold maker spending the majority of his career at Signode, in Glenview, IL.
Herb received his crown of glory on February 19, 2026 surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Charlyn J. Hetzel for 69 years, loving father of Michael (Cheryl) Hetzel, Karen Bell, Paula (Thomas) Schroeder, Brian (Joan) Hetzel, and Lynne (Jack) O’Toole. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Timothy D. Hetzel.
Herb loved to serve the Lord and was very proud to serve his country. He enjoyed spending time with family, good friends and his golf buddies. Herb spent more than 60 years as an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Palatine, where he was involved in many committees, bible studies and the church’s senior group. Herb had several hobbies, including reading, golfing and was a self-taught lifelong learner.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to Immanuel Lutheran School Education Foundation (ILSEF).
