Barbara M. Shine

July 1, 1933 — May 30, 2023

Visitation for Barbara M. Shine, 89, of Baileys Harbor, Door County, Wisconsin, will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy., Palatine, IL.  The Interment will take place at a later date, at Baileys Harbor Town Cemetery, Baileys Harbor, WI.

Barbara’s parents emigrated from Sweden, passing through Ellis Island, before putting down roots in Evanston, IL where Barbara was born. Her father, Nels, was a fisherman in Lapland Sweden, which bordered Finland on Kalix River. After visiting Door County, WI Nels knew their family would finally settle there so he could, once again, become a commercial fisherman. Their family lived in the famous Heidelberg House in Jacksonport, WI.

Barbara’s husband, Bob Shine, is fourth generation Shine family from Door County, WI. They met at Gibraltar High School in Fish Creek, WI, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on May 9, 2023. In 1963 they moved to Palatine, IL where Bob was offered a job as a linotype operator. Barbara loved to sew and was a wonderfully talented career seamstress. She owned her own business, and also worked for Nordstrom as a tailor. Retirement brought them back to Door County, where they built their dream home on Ekman property next to Barbara’s sister, Malin (Tudy) Ekman. In retirement, Barbara continued to work as a seamstress for a local store, making custom patterns and clothing.

Barbara enjoyed golf and cross-country ski racing. She competed in the 18-mile kortelopet race in Hayward, WI- a global, 10,000 person race. She was a huge Green Bay Packers fan. She never missed a game and donned her lucky Packers’ socks, only washing them when her beloved team lost.

Barbara was the beloved wife of Robert Shine for 70 years; loving mother of Carrie and Bill; mother-in-law of the late Herman Bueno, Carrie’s husband; and adoring grandmother of Aimee Laine Bueno.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Marlene Ekman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 7973 State Hwy 57, Baileys Harbor, WI 54202 or Sturgeon Bay Animal Shelter, PO BOX 93, Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235
