Al had a successful 43-year career as a mechanical engineer that saw him work for the same company for nearly the entirety of his adult working life while enduring several name or ownership changes, starting with Kleinschmidt Laboratories and continuing with the Elgin Watch Company which later became Electrodynamics. He retired in 1999.
An undergraduate at the University of Illinois in Champaign before being called to service and spending a two-year stint in West Berlin. After his time in the army, he returned to his schooling at the University of Illinois, Chicago.
In addition to tinkering with everything imaginable – taking things apart, sometimes putting them back together and fixing just about anything that was broken – Al was passionate about cars and could probably name just about every make and model that was within eyesight. The outdoor shed was a mini laboratory and getting on the tractor was a favorite pastime, including giving rides to his young grandsons. Over time, he and Loraine traveled through every state and visited more than 100 national parks and went on frequent vacations with their friends, including multiple international cruises.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Loraine. Loving father of Bob, Linda and Rick and their spouses, Jackie, Tom and Karla. Dearest grandfather of Tim, Ryan, Jack and Alivia.
