It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alberta Anna Clarice (Fick) (Pape) James, who passed away peacefully on May 25, 2025.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, at 9:30 am followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1190 N. Hicks Road, Palatine, Illinois 60067, with Interment to follow at Union Cemetery, Palatine. There is a luncheon at the church following interment.
Born in August of 1934, Alberta James was the firstborn child of Albert and Lydia Fick in Chicago, Illinois. Older sister to Burneal Fick; and Ernette Ryba, who both preceded her in death. The loving wife of Wyman L. Pape; and William F. James whom also preceded her to glory. A devoted mother to five children, Joel (Kathryn), Ellen, Brian (Monica), Kevin (Teresa) and Craig (Christine); and a cherished grandmother of 20 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.
Alberta was known for her faith in Jesus, devotion to family and tenacious independence. She loved to garden, music, playing the piano and spending time with family. Widowed in 1968 with five young children. Alberta made sure her children attended a Lutheran elementary school to hear about Jesus every day. Alberta married William James in 1974. William passed to glory in 1979, but not before being baptized and knowing his Lord. Alberta’s faith was infectious.
Alberta was a courageous woman of God who worked hard not only to provide for her family but also to instill in them a strong work ethic and a heart for the Lord Jesus. Alberta was awarded Mother of the Year by the Palatine Herald in 1980.
After graduating from Concordia Teacher’s College, River Forest, IL, Alberta worked as a called Lutheran school teacher at several Lutheran schools throughout her working life, teaching children the love of Jesus as well as academic subjects. After teaching, Alberta worked in several administrative roles. After her retirement Alberta served her Lord and her church, by providing meals for the needy and as a prayer warrior on the prayer chain.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Prepare to Serve, Church Professional Guarantee Scholarship, Concordia University Chicago (CUC.edu), or the American Cancer Society in Alberta James's name.
Alberta James will be deeply missed. We look forward to that great unending day, when we are reunited with her and our Savior.
